here at home a very important meeting on fixing those bad bolts on the new bay bridge. it will start in about 45 minutes from right now. caltrans will tell us what they are doing to fix the problem. it's been raising safety concerns about the new eastern span. ktvu's claudine wong has been on this story since 4:30 this morning. you are back now. >> reporter: we're hearing the meeting will be a progress report. ever since this problem was discovered on the new eastern span back in march. engineers have been figuring out the best way to fix it. apparently they still have a lot of options on the table. we're zooming in now to give you a better look where this is happening. it is where the roadway connects to one of the piers down below. they use these enormous bolts to do that. as you well know at this point, many of them are cracked. dozens of them. we've been talking to people this morning, commuters coming across. they said, look, we understand this is a big problem.

take the time to make sure whatever solution you pick it's right. that's what apparently they are doing. the mta spokesperson told me that the engineers have been going over a lot of plans. today we expect an update on not only what they think are the possible best solutions but also what they think about a possible cause because again they've been talking about the hydrogen embrittlement as the cause. they didn't know where it came from. the spokesperson says he thinks the engineers have a better idea. so we should hear more about that. in terms of the time frame and how long a solution will take, how long it will take before the problem is fixed, we don't expect one today. commuters we talked to say that's fine with them. >> just keep on working on it until you get it right. that's the only thing we can do. it's a new design. it's a new way of doing things. we need it. let's just wait until it's ready and then open it when it's ready. >> reporter: remember there's two shipments of bolts. the ones that cracked were in a

shipment of 96 that came in at 2008. but that same manufacturer sent another shipment of 192 bolts. that was shipped out in 2010. no problems they've seen with those. but they certainly want to take a much closer look at them. there's also a lot of input coming in from a lot of different sources. we know there was a meeting earlier this week with engineers and all sorts of people trying to figure out different angles on how to figure out the problem. we also know from the contra costa times that a former engineer sent a 32-page unsolicited report that they are taking a look at. really at this point, still gathering as much information as they can. this is a new design. it's very innovated. there's no way to go back and say well, they had this problem before and here's how to fix it. they have to come up with a new solution based on this problem discovered in march. we should hear where they stand on that coming up at 9:30. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, claudine.
